Fallout 3 didn't have much competition in 2008 in the realm of action RPGs, just the adequate, but unoriginal Tales of Vesperia and hyped sequel Fable II, which earned considerable critical praise. Fallout 3 surpasses Fable II, however, due to its intense action, memorable violence, and surprisingly good control. As an action RPG, Fallout 3 works very well, astonishingly well when compared to its predecessor Oblivion, which suffered from clunky combat. Shooting the heads off enemies has never been more fun, and the vast repertoire of weapons to wield only makes the experience sweeter. Fallout 3 has more action than most action RPGs of 2008 and before, and it wins this award for pulling it off with style and competence.
Runner-up: Fable II
