FFIX: PS, not PS2?

Digicube, a subsidiary of Square of Japan, confirmed that Final Fantasy IX will appear on Playstation and not Sony's next system. They are investigating the best time to release the game so they don't conflict with competitor's titles and they hope to release it in Japan by early next year or possibly even before that.

On the other hand, however, When GameSpot News contacted Square for confirmation on Digicube's claims, a company spokesperson replied, "Square has made no announcement on the sequel to Final Fantasy VIII."

In my opinion, I really don't know why they are contradicting themselves like this. Is it miscommunication between Square and its subsidiary or is the information incorrect? RPGFan will continue to report on this issue, as more information becomes available.
