Korean MMORPGs, which have recently been trying to invade the US market, have earned the reputation for mostly being nothing more than Diablo clones. While this is also true for the latest entry into the genre, Ragnarok Online takes the now classic gameplay and makes their own innovations.
Imagine a game that combines the gameplay of Diablo, the look of Legend of Mana, and a job system somewhat similar to Tactics Ogre. Coupled with a beautiful soundtrack, and it's no surprise tons of people are now playing Ragnarok Online.
Currently, the English version of the game is only in an alpha form. You begin the game as an acolyte; you can choose your sex and hairstyle. Outside of this, there is no customization for your avatar's look. Gameplay is rather limited at this point, as it is an alpha; you can fight enemies and raise experience, make parties, and change your class once. No class skills can be learned yet, very few of the NPCs have dialogue, and there is no story to speak of at this point. More elements to the game, however, should start appearing in upcoming builds.
There is no US publisher yet for Ragnarok Online, and Gravity, the game's publisher, have yet to give a reason for the game's translation into English. Attempts to contact the Korean publisher have went unanswered. RPGFan will continue to bring you more information on Ragnarok Online.
The game's client can be downloaded from Gravity's English site. Gravity has also announced translation work for another of their games, Arcturus. There is currently no downloadable form for Arcturus, but RPGFan will be bringing you screenshots and artwork from the game shortly. In the meantime, check out RPGFan's 118 screenshots, 14 pieces of artwork, 9 wallpaper designs, 26 GIFs, and 6 maps from Ragnarok Online.
