Final Fantasy XI Turns 11!
If you read that title and felt old, you're not alone. But you're still old.
08.10.13 - 2:19 PM

Eleven years ago Square Enix released its first MMO, Final Fantasy XI. This was the first Final Fantasy game that was exclusively a pay to play MMO and as such, received its fair share of praise and woes from fans around the globe. But here we are, 11 years later, and Square Enix is still keeping the Final Fantasy XI ship afloat. This week, Square Enix announced that they will be celebrating the 11-year success of their game by offering free downloads of three major battle area add-ons for a limited time. The add-ons, Vision of Abyssea,Scars of Abyssea, and Heroes of Abyssea are free to players who have yet to experience these add-ons. Keep in mind, if you're a Final Fantasy XI fan and you want to adventure through the Abyssea add-ons, you'll not only have be at level 30 in at least one job class, but you'll also have to have the Rise of the Zilart and Wings of the Goddess expansion packs already registered.

But wait, there's more!

For first time Abyssea explorers, Square Enix is offering a starter package filled with helpful in-game goods and supplies. Here are some of those in-game goodies according to the press release:

  • Eleven of the most popular Atma these enhancements allow users to strengthen their characters in a variety of ways while they journey within Abyssea
  • One Lunar Abyssite essential for equipping and using atma. And for seasoned veterans that already possess the lunar abyssite, 100,000 cruor is offered as an alternative.
  • 100,000 Cruor - Cruor is a red, naturally-occurring mineral found in Abyssea, as well as the standard currency of the realm. It can be exchanged for maps and other sundries, warp point activation, and special boons.
  • Increase to Initial Traverser Stone Stocks Magic traverser stones enable travel within Abyssea, and each stone enables its bearer to stay within the world for thirty minutes.

Whether you're a fan of Final Fantasy or just MMOs in general, Final Fantasy XI is definitely worth exploring (despite Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn being just around the corner). So happy 11th birthday Final Fantasy XI! Over a decade later and you've still got it.
