It’s time to head back to 1988 again, as SEGA has revealed Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 at launch. Now, we’re no strangers to the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series at RPGFan, and we’ve even reviewed Yakuza 0 in particular three times, most recently by Jono Logan in 2019.
While Yakuza 0 would make a solid third-party launch title for Switch 2 on its own, this Director’s Cut edition has some new features on offer. One will be especially obvious if you watched the extended reveal trailer:
That’s right, for the first time, you can experience Yakuza 0 with either English or Chinese voice options, and Director’s Cut expands the subtitle languages to include French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Simplified Chinese.
Second, though perhaps most interestingly of all, Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut will feature brand-new story cutscenes, offering more insight into some characters’ backstories and other events. Also new to this version is the online multiplayer mode, Red Light Raid, which features 60 playable characters to choose from to battle hordes of enemies.
If you’ve made it this far and are still wondering what the deal is with these games, luckily, we have a feature for that! But since it’s commonly agreed that, for many reasons, Yakuza 0 is one of the best places to jump into the series, it’s good that it’ll be the first one landing on Switch 2. The game does an exceptional job at setting the stage for what’s to come in the series, introducing you to dual protagonists, each with their own fighting styles, Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima. The story weaves their narratives together as you learn about the many players in the city, the importance of the Empty Lot and how it’s connected to a mysterious woman, and the staggering amount of quests, sidequests, minigames, and other content there is to engage with. Personally, I logged well over 100 hours and still only hit around a 50% completion rate, but every bit of that was enjoyable.
Wait, this isn’t a review. Why am I trying to sell you on it? Maybe I’m trying to sell myself on buying it again. In any case, there’s a whole lot of game in this game, and this version adds… well, more game. Look, I’ve been doing Switch 2 coverage for most of the day now, give me a break. Let’s look at some screenshots:

Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut is releasing in both physical and digital editions at the Switch 2 launch on June 5th, 2025. At the moment, the game has only been confirmed for Nintendo Switch 2, but keep an eye on RPGFan and the game’s official website for more info, as I’d be surprised if these features don’t find their way into the other versions of the game already available.
